Tribute to Ben Saunders
Speed record attempt to the North Pole, March 2008 When my friend, extreme adventurer, Ben Saunders attempted his solo expedition to the North Pole in 2008, South Comics followed him all the way with cartoon commentary on his daily blog. The result was the book, "Ben Speeds North." You can order your own copy of this special, limited edition, hard-cover book right here. (32 pages) |

Dec. 26, 2007. I couldn't resist this after reading Ben's comment on his weblog: An active glacier has been found on Mars. On the glacial ridges we can see white tips, which can only be freshly exposed ice. "I don't need much ice to pitch my tent, no sirree."

Ben Saunders
Ben Saunders is the youngest person to ski solo to the North Pole and holds the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton. In 2008, Ben was preparing for SOUTH, the first return journey to the South Pole on foot with another extreme-adventurer, Tony Haile. This 1,800-mile expedition would have been the longest unsupported polar journey in history, but Ben found himself called to the other end of the earth to attempt a speed record for a solo, unsupported trek to the North Pole. See Ben in "South" comic #012-2 Ben has featured Stan & Dudley on his blog. October 24 2007 August 20 2006 entry I discovered Ben Saunders and Tony Haile while trying to get the website name, "south.com", but these gents were way ahead of me! Stan & Dudley came to life on my drawing table after spending a winter reading books like Sir Ernest Shackleton's "South." I had no idea such extreme adventure was still thriving as Ben and Tony introduced me to the incredible heroics of the human spirit through their websites. If you like adventure, challenges, and good souls, (and incredible photos and videos) you must visit their sites!

After spending a winter sitting by the fire reading books like "Two Years Before the Mast" and Sir Ernest Shackleton's "South", I would find myself entertaining my children doodling about these extreme adventures. One snowy afternoon, Stan and Dudley appeared on my page - and wouldn'd go away. "South the Comic" began writing itself on the blank pages that my kids laid before me daily.
It wasn't long before volumes of sketches were gathered. Penguins seemed to be appearing everywhere... but none were anything like mine. (Needless to say, my kids also squeaked into the picture as well as Penny & Giff. "Dear ol' Dad. sigh...) I decided to publish "South" on my own. As a website designer for numerous celebrities and artists, this was right up my alley, and lo, here it is and here you are. South continues to grow, but sharing it with others depends on you. Tell all your friends if you like South and want more. Dont' tell me if you don't. It is beyond my control. Stan & Dudley already have a life of their own! - Anton Uhl, November 2007 - |
